Frequently Asked Questions

Ameritas will generate a proposal based on the benefits requested in the RFP. We offer  a variety of plan options, coinsurance/coverage levels, maximums and deductibles. We can also offer plan suggestions for new groups with benefits that would be most beneficial to student populations and their dependents.

Exclusions and limitations vary based on the plans requested by the group and their RFP. Ameritas’ proposals will include a page of exclusions and limitations that apply to our bid.

Yes! Ameritas offers a network of PPO providers throughout the country.

Typically, Ameritas’ proposals are based on a one-year contract/rate guarantee period starting from the effective date of the coverage. Requests for multi-year contracts/rate guarantee periods can be requested by Wellfleet at the time of bid, and the Ameritas Sales/Underwriting team will let Wellfleet know if additional information or conditions apply in approving a contract period/rate guarantee period.

Within the group policy, Ameritas can work with Wellfleet to determine the period of time preferred by the school when offering the student coverage.   Ameritas can provide rates on a semester basis or for an annual period depending on what the school prefers to offer.  When a student enrolls in coverage, the full premium will be paid as part of the tuition payment.  Wellfleet will collect the Ameritas portion of the premium and remit the full premium (either the full semester or the full year premium amount) to Ameritas.  The student will then have coverage for the term regardless if a student status changes (i.e if the student drops out of school or has a status change, the student will have coverage for the term). Changes to the student enrollment status can be made for the next enrollment period, including the adding or changing of dependents’ coverage.

When Ameritas provides a bid, the effective date for the group policy will be shown in the proposal based on the RFP request.

Within a group policy, a student will enroll in coverage based on the school’s desired enrollment period (beginning of each semester OR beginning of each school year).

Ameritas will generate a proposal based on the benefits requested in the RFP.  We offer a variety of plan options, including a waiting period, if requested by the RFP. Typically, Ameritas suggests plans to be quoted without waiting periods due to the nature of student populations and to ensure member satisfaction. However, Ameritas can provide a quote that includes waiting periods on procedures such as Major or Orthodontic benefits if requested by the group.

Pre-existing conditions do not apply  to most of Ameritas plans. For procedures to be covered by Ameritas, the procedures should be incurred after the effective date of the Ameritas plan.  Procedures incurred prior to the effective date of Ameritas’ plan would not be covered.

In a few procedure situations related to the filling of existing spaces where the tooth/space may have existed prior to the Ameritas coverage, some schools may request Ameritas’ bid to include coverage to allow coverage for procedures such as dentures, bridges, crowns, etc. fill that old space after the Ameritas coverage has gone into effect.  If a school would like this additional coverage (or if the RFP indicates this request), Ameritas can include this additional coverage in our bid for “full prior extraction coverage.”

Yes, students can enroll their eligible dependents at the same time the member enrolls.  Spouses, dependent children, and domestic partners (all as defined by each State’s legal dependent definition) are considered eligible.

Ameritas can provide Wellfleet with a plan highlight to share with the school/student for enrollment purposes.  Ameritas will not provide enrollment materials directly to the school/student.

After a student enrolls, Ameritas has the option of printing/mailing ID cards to the student’s address. Typically, ID card needs (i.e. whether printed ID cards are requested OR if a school prefers to only use electronic ID card options) is discussed at the time of bid and addressed for each school in Ameritas’ proposal. Ameritas can work with Wellfleet at the time of bid to determine how each school wants to handle ID card options.

If printed ID cards are used, the ID card is part of a “welcome letter” to the member.  The “welcome” portion of the letter confirms the member’s enrollment and provides information about using the plan, Ameritas contact information, etc.

Careington Dental and Davis Vision will no longer be offered by Wellfleet. We don’t anticipate much impact on schools that were previously using these; however, if any concerns, please reach out to your Wellfleet Representative.

Ameritas group dental and vision offerings can be added to any* fully-insured student health insurance plans by quote request only. Students who are not covered under a group offering will have the option to purchase coverage on an individual voluntary basis using a standalone option.

*Please note that individual dental offerings are not available to residents of Massachusetts and Maryland.

Because a group offering is only available upon request during the RFP/renewal process, any existing student health insurance plans will not be impacted by this. If you are interested in adding dental and vision to your SHIP, please request a quote during your next RFP/renewal process.
