Wellfleet Rx Student Formulary updates effective August 2024

The Wellfleet team continually focuses on ensuring our student health insurance plans meet the needs of our student members. When it comes to pharmacy care, new research and innovations are always emerging.

Our Pharmacy and Medical teams at Wellfleet Rx stay current with pharmaceutical changes, updating our Student Formulary* twice each year. In the most recent update, our student-centered formulary made several changes to ensure we’re providing our students with the right medications to meet their needs.

These changes included adding certain key medications to the formulary, removing quantity limits for certain medications that treat opioid use disorder, and removing more expensive brand medications in favor of generic formulations. Read on to learn more about our important formulary updates.

Addition of Halobetasol foam for skin conditions

To help those affected by skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema, we added Halobetasol foam to preferred status on our formulary. Topical Halobetasol is a steroid medication applied to the skin to improve redness, swelling, and itching.1 Individuals who struggle with plaque psoriasis or eczema may be prescribed topical Halobetasol.1 Its addition to the formulary will make it easier for affected individuals to get the treatment they need.

Additional muscle spasm treatment

In our latest formulary update, we added liquid Baclofen as another treatment option for those dealing with muscle spasms. Baclofen is a muscle relaxant medication, meaning it affects the spinal cord nerves, reducing muscle spasms and relieving pain.2 This medication can be used in individuals with muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis or spinal cord conditions.2 By adding liquid baclofen to the formulary, we hope to provide more treatment options for individuals struggling with these conditions.

Removal of opioid treatment quantity limits

To improve care for students struggling with opioid use disorder, we have removed the quantity limits for a medication called Buprenorphine. This drug is FDA-approved for treating opioid use disorder because of its ability to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, increase safety if an overdose occurs, and lower opioid misuse.3

By removing quantity limits, we aim to help members access the treatment they need to help them successfully recover from opioid use disorder.

Removal of brand name products in favor of generic versions

One of the pillars of Wellfleet Rx is cost containment, and we work hard to ensure students can access their needed medications at the lowest costs possible. That’s why we have a strong focus on using generic medications over brand-name medications whenever possible.

In our most recent formulary update, we have replaced several brand-name medications with their generic counterparts, helping reduce costs for students and school plans.

Some of the brand-name medications we removed in favor of generics include:

  • Spiriva Handihaler
  • Vyvanse
  • Risperdal Consta
