Safe and effective AI tools for student mental health

With numerous AI mental health solutions emerging, certain tools stand out for their effectiveness, safety features, and student-specific design. These platforms offer evidence-backed support while maintaining appropriate boundaries between AI assistance and professional care.

Wayhaven: Personalized AI wellness coaching

Wayhaven delivers dynamic, context-aware mental well-being support through AI wellness coaches that adapt to each student’s unique needs. The platform integrates user demographics and university-specific resources to create a tailored experience. Unlike basic chatbots, Wayhaven incorporates evidence-based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness techniques.1

Clinical trials demonstrate Wayhaven’s effectiveness, with students experiencing significant decreases in depression and anxiety symptoms while reporting increased self-efficacy.1 Users typically see a 30% reduction in anxiety feelings and a 25% mood improvement within the first week.2

Butler University, University of Houston, and Furman University are among colleges that have partnered with Wayhaven to provide students with 24/7 access to personalized coaching.3,4,5 Learn more about how chatbots work, and how they can operate as mental health tools here.

Woebot: CBT-based conversational therapy

Woebot, awarded Google Play’s Standout Well-Being App in 2019, offers step-by-step guidance using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. The app helps students work through everyday challenges including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and loneliness.6

In a randomized controlled trial, “the use of Woebot for a period of 2 weeks has been proven to be more effective at reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression than the use of self-help materials prepared by the World Health Organization.”7

TimelyCare: AI-powered telehealth platform

TimelyCare removes traditional barriers to mental health support through immediate, 24/7 virtual access. The platform uses AI to check symptoms, flag urgent needs, and connect students with appropriate care.8 Students typically wait only four minutes for emotional support,9 which is exponentially faster than a human provider due to clinical shortages and high demand for mental health support.

The platform has expanded rapidly, now serving nearly 3 million students across 300 campuses nationwide.10 Impressively, 81% of TimelyCare visits result in mental health improvement, providing valuable support for students who might otherwise forgo care. More than 50% of users report they would have done nothing without the platform.11

Wysa: Clinically validated support app

Wysa stands out for its extensive clinical validation, with 36 peer-reviewed publications demonstrating its effectiveness. 12 The platform received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation following trials showing it was more effective than standard care and comparable to in-person psychological counseling for managing chronic pain and associated depression,12 and the app protects health data with TLS encryption and maintains GDPR and HIPAA compliance.13

AI Solutions as a supplement

With all these options available to schools and students, both students and institutions must approach them thoughtfully, understanding both their benefits and risks. Though not perfect solutions, these tools represent a significant step forward in making mental health support more accessible, immediate, and effective for college students facing unprecedented challenges.
